When you finish a plate clean in a fine-dining restaurant, does that make you look starved and classless? Should you leave at least some amount of it?

It varies place to place

This question took me back to a disturbing event I witnessed in London around 30 years ago. I was staying in a hostel, did not know anyone and was wanting to have dinner. I got to talking to someone who wasn’t a traditional hostel guest. She had arrived earlier with a trash bag filled with her belongings. Anyway, I asked if she wanted to join me for dinner and she said yes. I don’t recall what restaurant we went to, possibly Italian. What does stick in my mind even 30 years later was this young lady and how she ate. She ate every morsel on her plate in a peculiar, obsessive way. I ate most, but not all my meal. When the waiter came around to pick up our plates he picked up hers first. It was pretty much licked clean. As he started to lift my plate she suddenly grabbed my plate out of his hand. Both the waiter and I were shocked but he released the plate. She then took my plate and proceeded to finish off what remained on my plate. I sat beside her, somewhat stunned. As soon as she finished she immediately jumped up and started running out. I jumped up to follow her to find out what was going on. The waiter of course stopped me and insisted I pay which I did and then resumed my pursuit of her to the bathroom. I arrived in the bathroom just as she was forcing everything out. I came to realize that she was bulimic, something that people were just becoming aware of during this time. I was horrified yet sad for her. As we walked back to the hostel she invited me to a party which I declined. I was uneasy around her by then and was concerned for my safety. She arrived back at the hostel after I had fallen sleep. Before I checked out the next morning I had an opportunity to talk to her and shared my concern over her bulimia. She did not deny it but did not want to discuss it. I left my Bible with her as well as my towel that she had asked to borrow. This event really shook me up and I have often wondered about her. I hope she’s alive and well!
